ARCHITECTURE AMOUR: THE SOUTHERN HOUSE

Following the contours of a sweeping coastal hill in Australia, the Southern House (known locally as the ‘Brow of The Hill’) has been designed by Fergus Scott Architects. Constructed with a rusty corten steel exterior that curves 270 degrees around the landscape, the design is built to maximise the natural light that enters the space, with a 9 foot high exterior wall and slanted roof creating a gap which is filled in with glass, allowing sunlight to flood the space within.
An outdoor fireplace also acts as a viewing point overlooking the landscape and waves below, and the adjacent wall of the house is designed to fully open up, exposing the kitchen and dining area to the fireside terrace. Another highlight is the sandbox, which is placed in the central area of the home and leads to a wooden infinity deck, giving the whole place a chilled out, beachy vibe. The rooms that surround the sandbox all open onto it with sliding doors for relaxed, open living.
